About us:

The All Sports Booster Club is the group of parents that raise money to support all Whitman varsity and junior varsity athletics. Founded in 1995 in response to new mandates fromMCPS concerning gender equity under Title IX, it replaced individual team booster clubs. Family memberships and donations provide about one-fifth of the total funds raised. The rest comes in a variety of ways, including concession sales at sporting events, Viking Spirit advertising sales, the annual mulch sale, Practice SAT/ACT fundraiser and individual team-sponsored fundraisers.

In addition to the direct support teams receive, all teams benefit indirectly because Booster Club financial support essentially augments the Athletic Department budget that is only partially funded by the county and state. This allows the Athletic Director to spend more to provide the means for safe and competent participation. All Whitman students benefit because much of our funding goes to improve athletic facilities used by everyone.

The money is used to provide safe and adequate facilities and equipment. Since 1995, the Booster Club has provided over $500,000 to Whitman Athletics. Some of the things funded by the Boosters have been:

Fields
Stadium – re-grade, new irrigation and drainage system, winter covers, new sound system and new Bermuda grass installed in 2004.
Middle – redesign and enlargement to make it all grass for field hockey, new sound system, additional lighting for all sports played on that field, Bermuda grass and irrigation system installed in 2005.
Upper – Annual seeding, watering and maintenance.
Baseball – all grass infield and dugouts

Weight Room
Complete renovation and all new equipment
Year-around staffing – school year and summer

Team Equipment
All teams have benefited based on the coaches requests-parallel bars, balls of all kinds, nets, goals, equipment bags, training mirrors, new poms, batting cage, scoring tables & chairs, clocks, videos, shot-put circle, long jump pit, high jump cover and standards, starter system upgrade, warm-ups and much more.

Other items
Lynx timing system, “shootaway” basketball machine, two video camera’s and supporting equipment, sound system and CD player, printer and computer interface, sports software, computer video software and equipment, various signage, and more including the Children’s Hospital baseline concussion testing program.

Each varsity sport receives a $600 grant each season that the coach can use to support their team as long as it is not used for food or items that the athlete would retain after the season. Our goal is to have all Whitman family student athletes as Booster Club members. Your membership covers all your student athletes in the family, in all sports, over the whole school year. One membership covers all.

 

Booster Club Guidelines:

Montgomery County Public Schools strongly recommend that club funds be used exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to organize, establish, promote and support all athletic programs equitably through clear and specific guidelines for the distribution of funds in accordance with MCPS policies and the provisions of Title IX. Funds raised by booster clubs may not be used to purchase personal items for any teams or individuals, including, but not limited to, shoes, swim suits, socks, mouth guards, or any items retained by the student.
